Sports Excellence Program

The Sports Excellence Program is designed for gifted and talented students who have demonstrated an advanced ability, or particular potential, in one of the targeted sports. It aims to provide young people talented in sport with the opportunity to pursue sporting excellence in a supportive educational environment with the flexibility to accommodate sport and school commitments.
A feature of the program is the provision of high quality sports coaching and training within the school curriculum.
Selection Procedures
Entry to this program will be competitive. Students will be selected according to criteria determined by the school and State Association in each sport.
Students nominating for program entry will participate in sports specific selection trials conducted by program coaches and/or State Association personnel.
Students recommended to the school for program entry will in addition need to:
- Demonstrate commitment to school studies
- Have a satisfactory record of school conduct
Copies of the most recent school reports will be consulted by school staff to determine the above before being offered a place in the S.E.P. Students who are successful in the selection trials and satisfy the other criteria will be offered enrolment at the school and a place in their chosen sport in the S.E.P.
It is a requirement that all members of the Surfing Squad have a Current Surf Survival Certificate.
Provisional Entry
Students with unfavourable reports may be granted provisional status into the program allowing them to demonstrate improvement in aspects of concern and thus retain a position in the S.E.P.
Flexibility
The school will provide an educational environment which is sufficiently flexible to allow students in the S.E.P. to undertake curriculum studies and training programs concurrently.
This flexibility may allow students to negotiate their deadlines for completion of set work in periods of intense training/competition after consultation with sport coach and S.E.P. Co-ordinator. However, all students will be expected to complete all work at a standard commensurate with their abilities. It is our intention that at the completion of their schooling students will be well placed to compete for places in tertiary institutions or employment.
Selected students may pursue a 3 year senior (11 & 12).
The Sports Excellence Program is compatible with both the O.P. and Non-O.P. strands of Senior Schooling 10, 11, & 12. School-based traineeships are encouraged among Non-O.P. students.
Welfare
The school will provide a stimulating, caring environment to provide for S.E.P. students special needs. A staff member will be attached as a co-ordinator/mentor to ensure that they are assisted in making informed decisions to balance academic studies with sporting commitments. The specialised coaching sessions will be conducted in school time and may include sports related topics such as sports nutrition, physiology, competition preparation and psychology as well as tuition in time management, study skills and goal setting.
Community Links
The program will foster closer relationships with the wider community including sporting associations, tertiary institutions and the Queensland Academy of Sport. S.E.P. students may also be provided with access to performance enhancement agencies (exercise, physiologists, sport psychologists) and associated support agencies (sports medicine, physiotherapists).
Sports Excellence Curriculum
All students in the S.E.P. will satisfy the curriculum requirements for their stage of schooling as determined by the Queensland Department of Education and the Board of Secondary School Studies. These students will also have access to well structured developmental programs of sports coaching and training by highly qualified and experienced State Association and school staff.
State Sporting Associations and “parent” professional organisations will have important roles in the S.E.P. They will be involved in the selection of S.E.P. students and the development and delivery of the coaching and training program.
The coaching and training programs will be held within the school or in venues close by allowing students maximum time for sport and study.
Students will be accepted into the S.E.P. in all year levels.
